Hustings Breakfast
Local businesses enjoyed a hearty breakfast in Folkestone last Thursday at the Burlington Hotel before cross examining each of the five prospective parliamentary candidates for the Folkestone and Hythe constituency. Hosted jointly by Channel Chamber of Commerce and the Federation of Small Business, this ‘Hustings’ event was scheduled in advance of the ‘leaders’ TV debate that same evening but it proved no less interesting for the local businesses who represented a broad variety of different sectors. The Candidates – Lyn Beaumont (Lib Dem): Damian Collins(Conservative), Penny Kemp ( Green), Frank McKenna(UKIP) and Donald Worsley (Labour) answered a host of questions that were of concern to businesses - ranging from the problems surrounding bank lending to late payments and red tape. Local issues such as parking restrictions and railway station access also stimulated a heated debate but all the candidates unanimously agreed that the regeneration of the district would be one of their top priorities if they were elected.
BCC’s Monthly Business Survey – Have your say
The British Chambers of Commerce latest monthly Business Survey (MBS) will be open until the end of the Tuesday.. The survey will take only 2-3 minutes to complete and can be found here
Airport Decision delayed by Two Months
The general election means that we must wait another two months to find out whether the government will block the Lydd Airport extension. The council granted planning permission against officers' advice last month and this prompted communities secretary John Denham to intervene. Shepway's major applications and project manager Terry Ellames now tells us this deadline has now been extended until mid-June because the decision cannot be taken during the election period.
Local Student Discount
University Centre Folkestone are setting up a scheme whereby companies who can offer a discount to their students for their services/products are listed on the UCF website and actively promoted to students (currently around 250 and growing rapidly). The businesses can display a sticker in their window to indicate their participation in the scheme. The General Election
Business and the British Chambers of Commerce, have been centre-stage in the early days of the Election campaign. The push to reverse the employer NICs rise has gained ground as a number of high-profile chief executives lent their voices to the debate

The voice of Chamber members was also heard last week as the first quarter results of the BCC Quarterly Economic Survey were released. Over 5,500 businesses took part - and their responses suggest that a weak recovery is indeed underway, but that it will need to be nurtured by both Ministers and the Bank of England in the weeks and months ahead. Although confidence is strengthening, businesses' investment intentions and cash flow positions remain extremely weak, suggesting that there's some way to go yet to embed the recovery

Plans for a new M20 junction at Ashford
Details of a key scheme to allow for major economic growth in the Ashford area by increasing capacity on the M20 through Kent have been published by Transport Minister Chris Mole.
The new junction on the M20 (10A – east of the existing Junction 10) will improve journey time reliability and safety for both long distance and local traffic on the M20, a key international route. It will also provide the increased capacity needed to unlock major development and investment in Ashford, including Government plans for 31,000 new homes and 28,000 new jobs in the area by 2031.
Following a public consultation by the Highways Agency, Transport Minister Chris Mole confirmed the planned improvements, to be one-third part funded by the Homes and Communities Agency, which include a roundabout over the M20, link roads and a new crossing for pedestrians and cyclists.
Subject to the completion of statutory processes and confirmation of value for money and funding, the new junction could be open for traffic in 2014/15.

Inspire Young People in Folkestone

Organic Vegetable Cookery Demonstration
Chamber member - Number Eleven in Folkestone have teamed up with Riverford Organic vegetables to bring you an exciting cookery demonstration on Tuesday 27th April from 7.30pm to 9.30pm. Riverford are award winning organic vegetable growers and they run a box scheme in our area. A Riverford Cook, Mark Bader, will be demonstrating easy vegetable based meals using the best of this season's vegetables.

The Kent Quality Mark
Following a year of hard work, Chamber member, First Learners’ Nursery of Cheriton has been awarded the Kent Quality Mark. The Kent Quality mark is a quality improvement tool that builds upon the strong practice that already exists in the county and supports practitioners to improve their ‘children’ focused outcomes.
Kent Air Ambulance Anniversary Awards
The Kent Air Ambulance Trust is busy organising a high-profile Anniversary Awards evening on 8th May to mark their achievements and celebrate being operational in Kent for 20 years. Both KOS Media and Heart FM will be joint media partners for the project and the Awards ceremony that will be hosted by Hearts Neil Kefford at the Leas Cliff Hall, Folkestone.
There are six award categories – Sporting, Business, Youngest, Group/Club, Most Unique Fundraising and the Kent Air Ambulance Special Award – and KAAT are now seeking businesses in the county that will sponsor a category each. They are looking for a sponsorship sum of £600, which will include dinner at the event for the four finalists and a guest plus two representatives from the sponsoring company. This will also include the supply of the award/trophy for the chosen category.

Grand Opening of the New Play Park

The Kent Quality Mark
Following a year of hard work, Chamber member, First Learners’ Nursery of Cheriton has been awarded the Kent Quality Mark. The Kent Quality mark is a quality improvement tool that builds upon the strong practice that already exists in the county and supports practitioners to improve their ‘children’ focused outcomes.
Kent Air Ambulance Anniversary Awards
The Kent Air Ambulance Trust is busy organising a high-profile Anniversary Awards evening on 8th May to mark their achievements and celebrate being operational in Kent for 20 years. Both KOS Media and Heart FM will be joint media partners for the project and the Awards ceremony that will be hosted by Hearts Neil Kefford at the Leas Cliff Hall, Folkestone.
There are six award categories – Sporting, Business, Youngest, Group/Club, Most Unique Fundraising and the Kent Air Ambulance Special Award – and KAAT are now seeking businesses in the county that will sponsor a category each. They are looking for a sponsorship sum of £600, which will include dinner at the event for the four finalists and a guest plus two representatives from the sponsoring company. This will also include the supply of the award/trophy for the chosen category.

Grand Opening of the New Play Park

HEADLINE - Lydd Airport Planning Permission Granted
At Channel Chamber, we take the views of our members seriously. We don't rely on one-off polls to gauge their opinions, but go out and speak to them personally on a regular basis. We applaud those councillors who took the time to go out into their communities to discuss the issues that matter to them in relation to Lydd Airport’s planning application.
The rich wildlife and ecosystem of the Marsh is something we are all interested in protecting, and supporting opportunities for green jobs and eco-tourism for local people is also a priority for Channel Chamber. We listened carefully to all the experts who spoke to us about the potential impact of the Airport on our Marsh, and we are fully convinced that Lydd Airport and local wildlife will continue to co-habit successfully, and indeed flourish. Lydd Airport have gone above and beyond what is required to protect the local area, and we strongly urge the various groups such as the RSPB to work together with - not against - the Airport management team in the protection of our local environment.
The whole community can be proud of seeing the democratic process in action. We also feel great sadness that certain minority interest groups, who represent the views of only a handful of our community, seek to waste public money on challenging the carefully considered views of our elected Council. These bully-boy tactics are not only a challenge to our democratic process, but are based on incorrect information and self-interest. We are confident that they will fail.

Say no to National Insurance Contributions (NICs) increase
Chamber members across the country are calling upon the Government to reverse the 1 percentage-point employer National Insurance Contributions (NICs) increase planned for April 2011.
Businesses know that it is imperative for the Government to begin the difficult job of repairing the public finances. But this NICs increase is a 'tax on jobs' - and will discourage companies of all sizes from taking on new staff at a critical point in our economic recovery.
The British Chambers of Commerce urge the Government to work with business groups to find alternative ways to close the UK's budget deficit - beginning with a credible plan to reduce inefficiency in public sector spending. Any Government has to realise that additional taxes on businesses, especially small- and medium-sized companies, must be a last resort, not an easy way forward.
The respected and independent Institute for Fiscal Studies has commented that 'employer [NI] contributions bear no relation to benefits provided under the NI scheme. These contributions are in effect simply a payroll tax'. From our perspective, further rises in NI mean fewer jobs, more people signing on, and a slower recovery for UK plc.

The case is clear. No NICs increase - no tax on jobs.
It’s Time to Ring Fence Your Energy Costs
Looking at the wholesale energy market price indices there appears to be substantial increases in energy costs forecasted in the next 2/3 years. By 2012/13 the kWh price could have risen well in excess of 50%, particularly in electricity.
This is going to have a significant impact on Chamber members’ businesses, at a time when you can least afford it. Especially when you are trying to trade out of a depressed market. Have you ever dreamt of seeing your artwork prominently displayed for all to see? Well, thanks to Chamber member - Port Lympne Wild Animal Park, that dream can become a reality! The Wild Animal Park will hold a wildlife art exhibition over the Easter Break (2nd April-11th April). All budding artists are invited to enter for this fantastic opportunity; it doesn’t matter whether you do stunning sculptures or perfect pictures, all mediums will be considered.
The art exhibition week will commence with a preview evening on Thursday 1st April opened by Vic Reeves—a keen artist himself. Held in the Marquee at Port Lympne, the preview evening will be an excellent opportunity to view the dazzling exhibition pieces that have been submitted. The preview evening is free, but by invitation only. Entry to the exhibition is free to all paying visitors to the Park. A donation from all sales will go towards The Aspinall Foundation to aid their vital conservation work both at home in Kent at Howletts & Port Lympne Wild Animal Parks and abroad.

BREAKING NEWS - Michael Howard supports Lydd Airport's Planning Application
Earlier today Michael Howard announced his support for Lydd Airport's planning applications having successfully negotiated two exciting property protection schemes on behalf of local residents. The first scheme will offer protection, outside of any statutory obligations, to people who fear for the value of their properties as a result of the airport development. A new noise protection scheme will also offer local assistance with secondary glazing and/or double glazing.
The scene is now set for a momentous decision by Shepway District Councillors this Wednesday evening when they meet to determine the future of Lydd Airport and their £25 million expansion plans

Key transport projects will deliver £85 billion benefit to UK economy
Prioritising thirteen crucial transport projects over the life of the next Parliament - twelve regional and one national - would bring the UK economic benefits worth a massive £85 billion, according to research by the British Chambers of Commerce (BCC).
Businesses from across the UK revealed the transport projects that they believe are essential to the future success and growth of their regional economies. The projects include:
London - Crossrail Cost: £15.9bn Benefit: £36bn
South East - M20 Operation Stack Cost: £48m Benefit: £75m
South West - A303/A358 Improvement Scheme Cost: £184m Benefit: £1.1bn

This Saturday afternoon, Folkestone Invicta Football Club are inviting the local community to join them in observing a minute's silence before the match with Croydon Athletic in memory of Rifleman Aldridge. To precede this there will be a roll-call of organisations, businesses, schools and clubs in and around Folkestone who are represented on the day to pay their respects. The Club have agreed to waive the normal gate charge and allow free entry.
Three Parliamentary Candidates face Question Time
Folkestone and Hythe’s three parliamentary candidates have agreed to a spot of Question Time grilling from an invited audience at a Breakfast Forum in Elham, near Folkestone, on Friday 12 March.
This free event will take place at the Rose and Crown, Elham, from 8 to 9.30am.
